Installing MakeMKV on most Linux distributions is done by compiling it. #PROCESS MONITOR MAKEMKV DOWNLOAD INSTALL#Install VLC (from the Ubuntu repo, not the Snap Store). The process to get it working is very simple: #PROCESS MONITOR MAKEMKV DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE#Personally, I reason that BluRay is a proprietary format to start with, and since I already use lots of closed-source software for entertainment purposes, e.g., Steam, Netflix, Spotify, etc… Why not!?īut while MakeKMKV is technically software you have to buy all of its features (including the stuff that lets you play BluRays WITH menus in VLC) is “free” while the app is in beta.Īnd the app has been in beta for around 10 years □□♂️. Save and close the gedit textfile, and your copy of MakeMKV will not only be able to rip and save your DVDs and Blurays, but will also make it so that you can watch them through your desired video program just by opening the disk! Hopefully this guide has been helpful for you, and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to send them my way.MakeMKV is proprietary, paid-for software - and it’s at this point some of you will nope-out. Once gedit is open, all you'll need to type is: sg ![]() To make it permanently accessible, we'll need to do the following: sudo gedit /etc/modules-load.d/sg.conf This will make the optical drive visible until you logout or reboot. Type into your terminal: sudo modprobe sg The last thing we'll need to do is make it so that MakeMKV can actually see your optical drive, as it doesn't do this by default. If it complains that such a symlink already exists, that's perfectly okay. Go back to your terminal, either opening a fresh one, or typing 'cd' to set it back to the Home Folder, and type in: sudo ln -s libmmbd.so.0 /usr/lib/ If you want to be able to use MakeMKV's decryption to be able to watch Blu-Ray discs, you'll need to create a symbolic link between MakeMKV and any video program you plan on using. We're almost there, but there's two things we'll need to do before we're done. Once both portions have been made, you should be able to see MakeMKV pop up in your applications list. Then complete the following commands to get into the bin folder, and make and install that part as well: cd makemkv-bin-1.15.4ĭuring the make phase in either folder you'll need to agree to the make process being completed, and in one of them you'll have to scroll through and agree to an EULA. We'll then go back up one level in the file system to return to your Home folder, which is where the two folders download by default. #PROCESS MONITOR MAKEMKV DOWNLOAD CODE#You can expect that a lot of strange code will appear on your screen especially during the configure phase in the oss folder. ![]() Now, we'll first go into the oss folder we've just extracted, and we'll configure, make, and then install this portion of the application. We'll then extract both of the downloaded tar.gz files as their own separate folders. As of this moment, the latest version of MakeMKV is 1.15.1. We'll be retrieving these from directly using wget, which should be included as part of your basic installation by default. The next thing we'll need to do is to download the two files that combine together to make the MakeMKV application: the oss and the bin files. These can be added to your system with: sudo eopkg install ffmpeg-devel qt5-base-devel openssl-11-devel These will be used later to help build the MakeMKV package. Once it's finished installing and synchronizing the associated packages, you'll next need to install two packages, specifically the ffmpeg-devel and qt5-base-devel packages. To do this, type in: sudo eopkg it -c vel This will include things like your software compiler, make, and cmake tools. Once that's completed, we'll need to install the Base Development Tools. Open up the terminal and type in: sudo eopkg up To start with, obviously you'll want to make sure that your copy of Solus is up-to-date. #PROCESS MONITOR MAKEMKV DOWNLOAD HOW TO#Since it took me so long to do the research myself on how to get MakeMKV running, I figured I'd share it so that those who need to get it installed at a later date have an easy to reference guide on how to do it. So I've wanted to help out others when it comes to getting Solus setup for some desirable applications that are not in the Software Center, especially for those who are inexperienced in Linux. #PROCESS MONITOR MAKEMKV DOWNLOAD UPDATE#Older versions are not kept once a new update becomes available, which will result in a 404 error from terminal. Check /download to see what the latest version is, and change the version number below as needed. EDIT: Updated for latest version and added openssl-11-devel dependency. ![]()
